Herwin Records was an American record label . It was originally active from 1924 to 1930, but was revived in the 1960s and 1970s.

history

Herwin was founded in 1924 in St. Louis , Missouri , by the two brothers Herbert and Edwin Schiele, who combined parts of their first names to form the label name "Herwin". Most of the records released on the Herwin label were recordings licensed by Gennett and Paramount . In 1930 Herwin was sold to the "Wisconsin Chair Company" (the parent company of Paramount Records), which, however, no longer released records under this name.

In the 1960s, the label was revived by the record collector Bernard Klatzko , who initially used it to record recordings from the Library of Congress as well as his own new recordings by "rediscovered" blues musicians such as Bukka White , Son House and Skip James in the "78 rpm look" bring out; from 1971 on he produced long-playing records with re-releases of historical jazz (100 series), blues (200 series) and ragtime recordings (400 series).
