Herz-Jesu-Kirche (Gmünd)
The Herz-Jesu-Kirche is a Roman Catholic church building in Gmünd in Lower Austria .
Location and architecture
The Herz-Jesu-Kirche is in an elevated position in the line of sight at the end of the ascending Schubertstrasse in Gmünd-Neustadt. The wide double tower facade has neo-Romanesque echoes. On the portal there are reliefs of the archangels Michael and Gabriel created by Adolf Treberer-Treberspurg . On both sides of the church building are adjacent buildings with the rectory and the rectory.
The wall paintings in the dome depicting the gathering of saints around the Lamb of God are by Lucia Jirgal . The wall paintings in the apse , which show Christ's rule over the spiritual and secular classes , are the work of the artist couple Piffl-Moser. In 1957, Othmar Lux created the carved figure of Saint Joseph on the left side altar, Adolf Treberer-Treberspurg in 1954 the carved figure of the Madonna in protective cloak on the right side altar. The wooden reliefs on the lecterns are made by the artist Carl Hermann , who also created the sculpture Die Mrauerbe bei Kirchenplatz in 1966 . The organ from 1955 is the work of the Mauracher brothers .
history
During the First World War, there was a large refugee camp in Gmünd in which a wooden emergency church was built. Gmünd-Neustadt was created as a new district on the area of the refugee camp. The church became a parish exposition in 1948 , which was left to the Oblati Mariae Immaculatae for care. Due to the dilapidation of the wooden church, a new church was necessary.
The new Herz-Jesu-Kirche was built from 1950 to 1953 according to plans by the architect Josef Friedl . The consecration in October 1953 was carried out by the then coadjutor bishop Franz König . In 1978 the Herz-Jesu-Kirche received new church doors. In 1984 the interior was redesigned according to the standards of the Second Vatican Council .
