The Sacred Heart Church ( Arabic كنيسة قلب اليسوع الأقدس) or Latin Church (كنيسة اللاتين) is the Church of the Roman Catholics in Latakia in Syria . She is also responsible for the city's Syrian and Armenian Catholics .

Location

The church is located in downtown Latakia on the east side of Baghdader Street (شارع بغداد) north of al-Sulaiba Street (شارع الصليبة) and south of Yarmuk Strait (شارع اليرموك), close to the port facilities.

history

The Franciscans (OFM) came to Latakia in 1733. The first priest to work here was Father Dominic Marwiati from 1734. In 1829 they built a small monastery and a first Latin church. They also ran a school for boys and one for girls. During the French mandate, the current church was built at this location next to the port of Latakia according to plans by a French engineer and consecrated on March 19, 1933 by Bishop Verdiano Gianin. After the French withdrew from Latakia in 1946, the Franciscans bought the large school from them, which they ran until 1967.

The church and its furnishings

The Latin monastery is considered to be the largest monastery in the city of Latakia. It has a large garden, a large hall, playgrounds and buildings. The Latin church is one of the largest in the city. It is an east- facing basilica with two large bell towers with a pyramid roof and square cross-section on both sides of the west side facing the street , between the large, ogival main entrance with three entrance doors, of which the middle one is larger than the two outer ones.

The parish

The Franciscans in Latakia not only take care of the Roman Catholics, but also the members of the Syrian Catholic and Armenian Catholic Church, because they have no church and no priests of their own. The number of priests who have worked in the Church so far is around 90.

In 2007, Father Antoine Luxa was the pastor of the Church.
