The title Duke of Villars ( Duc de Villars ) is a French nobility title from the 17th to 19th centuries that was awarded twice in the 18th century:

  • a title that was worn from 1627 to 1852 in a younger branch of the House of Brancas , often called "Duke of Villars-Brancas" to distinguish it from the other, more recent;
  • a title that was worn in the house of Villars from 1705 to 1770 , also called "Duke of Vaux-Villars".

The title "Duke of Villars" was 1627 by Louis XIII. awarded in favor of Georges de Brancas (around 1565 / 68–1657). The center of the duchy was Villars in what is now the Vaucluse department . Georges de Brancas was named Pair de France in 1652 .

The title "Duke of Villars" was given in 1705 by Louis XIV in favor of Claude-Louis-Hector de Villars , called Maréchal de Villars (whose name comes from the small fief of La Chapelle-Villars southwest of Vienne ). The king elevated a group of goods that the Marshal had acquired southeast of Paris (Vicomté de Melun en partie with Vaux-le-Vicomte ), and whose center was in Vaux-le-Vicomte, to the duchy. The marshal was appointed Pair de France in 1709.
