Duke's chest

The ducal box in Kelheim was built at the end of the 15th century from stone blocks from the former Kelheim castle. It served as a store for the tithe natural donations to the Duke.

The building is lower, but longer than its Abensberg counterpart . In the course of time numerous structural changes were made to the building. After the Second World War , for example, the Danube high school was housed in the building . During a renovation, the numerous partition walls and other fixtures were removed so that the ground floor and first floor now practically each consist of a single room.

In 1981 the Kelheim Archaeological Museum , which was founded in 1908, moved to the ground floor, where history from prehistoric times to the first centuries after Christ has been shown ever since. In 1990, another department dedicated to the history of the city was opened on the first floor. Part of the floor is also available for special exhibitions.

In the inner courtyard of the museum there is an original section and the reconstruction of the fortification wall of the Celtic oppidum Alkimoennis at its original height, the remains of which are on the Michelsberg .
