The Hessenhaus

The Hessenhaus is a historic warehouse in Antwerp . It is named after the carters from Frammersbach who transported goods on the Nuremberg - Antwerp route.

The wealthy widow Anna Janssens had the Renaissance building, which was completed in 1564, built at the request of German merchants. On the first floor there were stables and stores. On the walls there are still the rings to which the horses are tied.

After the golden age of Antwerp trade, the building served as a Protestant prayer house, barracks, fire station, warehouse and workshops.

After the restoration in 1975, the building provided space for temporary exhibitions. Among other things, the painting by the entrepreneur Gilbert van Schoonbeke , who built the Antwerp waterways through which the islands were created, hangs here .
