The Hessenlager is a former military camp Hesse-Darmstadt urban troops during the French occupation in Göhren on Rügen .

location

The camp was located south of Göhren near the south beach immediately west of the road from Göhren to Lobbe . A little further east is the Baltic Sea . Remains of ramparts from the camp established in 1812 are still preserved, which are designated as ground memorials and run parallel to the road along this. At the former location, on the highest point of the wall, a stone with the inscription Hessisches Lager in 1812 reminds of the camp. An explanatory board is also attached. Today the museum ship Luise is diagonally opposite .

history

The tent camp on the shores of the Baltic Sea was set up in a wood by two Hessian-Darmstadt companies. The troops belonged to the Confederation of the Rhine allied with Napoleonic France . The strategic purpose of the camp was to prevent British troops from landing on Rügen. The result was a barrack designed for 100 men and a hut in the ground that was covered with straw and branches. In the middle, an elongated square was laid out, which was provided with walking paths and lawn benches and is described as clean. In addition, a large earth pyramid was built, but no remains of it can be found today. The purpose of the pyramid is unclear. Possibly it served as a signal station or lookout. In the traditions, the discipline of these troops is described as significantly better than that of the English, Bavarian , Bergisch and French troops, which were also temporarily stationed in the area of the Mönchgut during this period . Traders in stalls behind the camp offered provisions.

The area in which the warehouse was set up was previously called Slötel (= key ).
