Hevelius is an impact crater on the western edge of the front of the moon , on the western edge of Oceanus Procellarum , south of the Cavalerius crater . The crater rim of Hevelius is very heavily eroded and partially leveled in the north and south, the interior is criss-crossed by a system of fracture grooves , the Rimae Hevelius .

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the astronomer Johannes Hevelius .
