HiROS

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

HiROS ( Hi gh R esolution O ptical S ystem German: high-resolution optical system) was a planned satellite project for earth exploration . It should achieve a resolution of 0.5 meters with light in the visible range and in the near infrared range . HiROS has a mass of 820 kg. HiROS was developed by the German Aerospace Center and was intended to serve environmental monitoring and disaster control as well as being used by the German Federal Intelligence Service and the US government.

The embassy dispatches published on Wikileaks show that the Federal Intelligence Service was the main customer of the project. He was assigned 30% of the planned capacity. After the dispatches became known, the federal government no longer wanted to support the project with a three-digit million sum. The project was partly the subject of a small request from politicians on the left to the federal government. In July 2014, DLR announced that "all national activities for the HiROS concept have been discontinued."
