The Hickelhöhle is the second largest cave in Saxon Switzerland and a popular destination for hikers.
The cave is located in the Thorwalder walls , above the Großer Zschand south of the armory , on the corridor of the Sebnitz district of Ottendorf . Together with the cowshed, it is one of the most famous caves in Saxon Switzerland. With a depth of 12 to 14 m and a width of 45 m, the Hickel cave is a very wide layer joint cave that is designed as a half cave . These layer joint cavities, which are typical for Saxon Switzerland, are created by rainwater seeping in from above on impermeable intermediate layers, the so-called layer joints. These go back to the layer-by-layer deposition of clayey components during the sand deposits in the sea of chalk. The large-scale structure of the sandstone in the area of the Thorwald walls contributed to the size of the cave.
Above the Hickelhöhle is the Hickelkopf , a climbing rock that overhangs on almost all sides and only stands on three small pedestal feet .
