Hickman and Obion Railroad

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hickman and Obion Railroad was an American railroad company based in Tennessee and Kentucky .

history

The railway company received on December 20, 1853 from the General Assembly of Tennessee and in the period 1853/1854 from the State of Kentucky the concessions to build a railway line between Hickman (Kentucky) and the railway line of the Mobile and Ohio Railroad in Obion County . The concession included the extension to Dresden (Tennessee) if the Nashville and Northwest Railroad did not build their planned route. Shortly after the approval, construction of the 22.5 kilometer long railway line between Hickman and what would later become Union City began. On November 16, 1855, before completion of the railway line, the Nashville and Northwestern Railroad (N&NW) received approval to take over the railway company. The company took over all existing assets and all rights of the Hickman & Obion Railroad under a 1000-year lease, acquired the majority of the shares and undertook to complete the railway line. As a result, the Hickman & Obion Railroad ended its economic activity. With the takeover, N&NW was able to complete its planned railway line between Nashville and Hickman on the Mississippi . The Nashville and Northwestern Railroad was taken over by the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railway in 1873 .

The president of the Hickman Society was Hickman District Judge, AD Kingman.
