The Hiei-zan ( Japanese. 比叡 山 ) is a 848.1 m high mountain on the border of the northeastern district of Sakyō-ku of Kyōto in the prefecture of Kyōto and utsu in the prefecture of Shiga . It was strategically located very favorably between the important old province of Ōmi and the imperial capital.

On the east side under the summit, Saichō founded the Enryaku-ji in 788, the Buddhist Tendai school, the headquarters of which is located in this monastery even after the violent power struggles against Oda Nobunaga in 1571.

The Shinto shrine Hiyoshi-Taisha nearby houses the patron goddess of Enryaku-ji.

Today the Hiei-zan can be reached both from Kyoto and from Ōtsu by cable car , as well as on the Hiei-zan-Driveway and offers delightful views of both cities and the bivouac at the same time .

At the top there is a small amusement park especially for families with children.
