High mobility group proteins

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The High-Mobility Group or HMG is a protein structure motif and at the same time the name of a group of DNA-binding proteins that play a role in transcription , replication , recombination and DNA repair .

HMG-box proteins are found in a large number of eukaryotic organisms.

HMG proteins were originally isolated from mammalian cells and named after their electrophoretic mobility in polyacrylamide gels.

Classification

The High-Mobility Group proteins are divided into three families, each with a characteristic domain .
