High Williamshaw

High Williamshaw , also Whitlaw , is a farm building near the Scottish town of Stewarton in the East Ayrshire council area . In 1980 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

The building was built in the late 18th century for T. L. Donaldson, a senior military man. The exact year of construction is not recorded, but it is settled around the year 1771. On a map from 1775 the property is listed under the name Whitlaw . In 1862, High Williamshaw was extensively expanded. After the building's condition had deteriorated significantly over the years, it was restored in the 1980s.

description

High Williamshaw is isolated about three kilometers northeast of Stewarton. The high symmetry and stylistic details of the south-facing front are typical of a laird's house from this period. The two-story building is three axes wide. The central entrance area is worked in the Venetian style and closes with a round arch with a keystone . The building closes with a slate-covered gable roof with stepped gables . One-storey, L-shaped extensions go off on both sides, which are part of the extensions from the 19th century. This results in a U-shaped floor plan at the rear.
