Stewarton ( Gaelic : Baile nan Stiùbhartach ) is a village in the north of the Scottish Council Area East Ayrshire or in the traditional county of Ayrshire . It is located about seven kilometers north of Kilmarnock and 13 kilometers northeast of Irvine on Annick Water .

history

The village developed from the 16th century as a location for the textile industry. She gained particular fame for the manufacture of headgear, including for the military. The expansion of the textile production range in the 19th century provided a surge in growth. In the 1880s, around 2500 people in Stewarton were directly involved in textile production. Stewarton is the birthplace of the engineer David Dale , who among other things improved textile production and founded the industrial estate of New Lanark . Copper was also produced in Stewarton.

In 1720 which was close to Stewarton mansion Kennox House built.

In 1951 there were 2,800 people in Stewarton. Since then the population has been increasing. As part of the 2011 census survey, Stewarton had 7,065 inhabitants.

The A735 (Kilmarnock – Lugton ) is Stewarton's main thoroughfare. Furthermore, the B778 ( Kilwinning - Fenwick ) and the B769 (Irvine - Newton Mearns ) cross. The M77 runs a few kilometers to the east . In the 1860s Stewarton got its own train station along the newly created Glasgow, Barrhead and Kilmarnock Joint Railway . It is still in operation today.
