The Hildagsburg was a medieval Niederungsburg southeast of the village of Elbeu . Apart from a few remains of the ramparts, it has not been preserved.
location
The Burgstall is located approximately at today's intersection of the Mittelland Canal with the railway line leading from Magdeburg to Stendal .
history
The castle originally rose directly on the western bank of the Elbe and dominated the traffic on the river. The castle was originally built as a Slavic castle in the 8th century. At the end of the 10th century the castle complex was expanded. It was the seat of the Margraves of Hildagsburg . In 1129 the castle was destroyed by Margrave Albrecht . The castle was rebuilt. Around 1300 the Elbe began to form an eastern branch, which soon developed into the main branch. The castle lost its strategic importance and fell into disrepair. The chapel at Hildagsburg was mentioned for the last time in 1376.
The remains of the castle were used as building material in 1803 when the road leading from Magdeburg via Wolmirstedt to Stendal was built . Remnants disappeared when the Mittelland Canal was built in 1927.
Excavations
Archaeologists started excavations in 2009 as part of the extensive construction work to reconstruct the Mittelland Canal and the railway underpass.
