Hillshire Brands was an American food company. The Chicago-based company primarily produced and marketed packaged meats and frozen baked goods. Around three quarters of the products went to the grocery trade and a quarter to large kitchens ( catering and community catering ). Founded in 2012 by the split-up of Sara Lee , Hillshire Brands was taken over by Tyson Foods and dissolved in 2014 .
history
Hillshire Brands was created on June 29, 2012 from the split of Sara Lee Corporation, whose North American food division it continued, while activities outside North America have since been represented by DE Master Blenders 1753 , formerly Douwe Egberts (coffee, tea).
Hillshire Brands employed around 9,000 people and had annual sales of approximately $ 4.04 billion (as of 2012). Hillshire brands include Jimmy Dean, Ball Park, Hillshire Farm, Kahns, State Fair, Sara Lee, Chef Pierre, Aidells, Gallo Salame and Golden Island.
In May 2014, Hillshire Brands announced its intention to acquire Pinnacle Foods . A few days later, the poultry meat processor Pilgrim's Pride , majority-owned by the Brazilian meat company JBS , submitted an offer to take over Hillshire Brands. At the end of May 2014, the US meat company Tyson Foods also offered Hillshire Brands. When Tyson later increased its takeover offer significantly, Hillshire Brands withdrew its offer to Pinnacle Foods at the same time in early June 2014 and accepted the takeover offer.
