Himl

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Himl or Haml ( Arabic حمل, DMG ḥi / aml  'Last'), also Hamla (حملة / Hamla ) called, was an Arab unit of weight, which was based on the load that a Saumtier could be charged. It is related to the Wasq . Walther Hinz translates Himl as "camel load."

Relation to other Arabic weight units

The Hanafi scholar Sheikh-zāde (d. 1667) states in his work Maǧmaʿ al-anhur that 1 Himl = 300 men = 600 Ratl = 78,000 Dirhams . According to ar-Raschīd ibn Zubair (12th century), each Himl is equivalent to 10,000 dinars.

In Egypt, flour and sweet pepper counted 1 Himl = 300 Egyptian Ratl, for lacquer and black pepper 1 Himl = 500 Egyptian Ratl, for linen and Brazilwood = 600 Egyptian Ratl and for combed cotton 1 Himl = 553 1/3 Ratl.

In Sanaa in the 17th century the camel Himl was equivalent to 30 qadah .

Conversion into the metric system

Sauvaire calculates the Himl on the basis of the information in Sheikh-zāde at around 241 kilograms. Hinz recommends using an approximate value of around 250 kilograms for 1 Himl in the absence of more detailed information .
