For centuries, the Leichenweg was the shortest connection between Pohlitz and Greiz. The unpaved and steep path was very difficult, especially when it was raining or in winter. With the construction of Cloßstrasse in 1895/96, a connection between the two places was created that can be used by carts. Since the shorter funeral route was still the most popular connection with pedestrians, the staircase was built on it from 1901. In 1902 the first section between Oberer Silberstrasse and Cloßstrasse was completed with 155 steps, in 1908 the second between Cloßstrasse and Heynestrasse with 54 steps. The lower section is lined with residential buildings that can only be reached by stairs.

In 1953, 1956 and 1999 repairs were carried out mainly in the area above Clossstrasse, and in 2001 the lower part was also renovated.
