Hinkley is a place ( Unincorporated Area ) in California . It is located in the Mojave Desert in San Bernardino County , 150 km northeast of Los Angeles .

Hinkley became known because the coolant of a compressor station from Pacific Gas and Electric polluted the groundwater there. The disaster was uncovered by Erin Brockovich and discussed in the film of the same name .
