The shepherd's leap

Shepherd's jump (Spanish: Salto del pastor) is a popular sport in the Canary Islands that has its roots in regional customs and is now a tourist attraction.

According to tradition, the jump originated on the mountainous western islands of the archipelago ( La Gomera , El Hierro and La Palma ) and gradually spread over the entire Canary Islands. In order to overcome height differences quickly and safely in mountainous terrain in the shortest possible time, the herdsmen used a several meter long wooden stick, the "garrote", to jump over the terraces (usually downhill) and to get to a lower level or surface . The jump lances are mostly provided with a metal tip, the “regatón”, in order to find a better grip in the ground. The origin is not entirely clear. From today's perspective, however, it can be traced back to the native inhabitants of the islands, the Old Canary Islands .

This mode of transport has spread as a local sport on all the islands of the Canaries, often as a show event for tourists.
