history

Construction of the Hisar Mosque began in 1592 and lasted six years; It was opened in 1598. In 1813, 1881, 1927 and 1980 parts of the mosque had to be restored.

Origin of name

The name is derived from the location of the mosque: Hisar comes from Turkish and means fortress ; Hisarönü means in front of the fortress and Hisarönü-Camii means mosque in front of the fortress . In 1872 the ruins of a fortress were torn down on a square behind the mosque. The name is supposed to remind of the fortress at that time.
