Hisham al-Ichtiyar

Hischam al-Ichtiyar (further transliteration in Hischam Ichtiyar ; Arabic هشام الاختيار, DMG Hišām al-Iḫtiyār ; * 1941 ; † July 20, 2012 Damascus ) was a Syrian military. Most recently, he was National Security Advisor and Head of the National Security Office under President Bashar al-Assad .

Life

Hisham al-Ichtiyar was a member of the Ba'ath Party and from 2001 to 2005 director of the Idarat al-Amn al-Amm intelligence service . He belonged to the inner circle of power around President Assad and had the rank of major general.

According to official television, Hisham al-Ichtiyar died on July 20, 2012 as a result of a suicide attack against the government cabinet on July 18, while he was staying at the headquarters of the National Security Agency. Defense Minister Daud Radschha , Deputy Defense Minister Assef Shawkat and the head of the crisis cell to crush the rebellion, General Hassan Turkmani , were also killed. The condition of Interior Minister Mohammed Ibrahim al-Schaar , who was also injured in the attack, is unclear (as of July 18, 2012).
