History Center Dybbøl Banke
The history center Dybbøl Banke (German history center Düppeler Anhöhe ) is a museum and a history park at the Düppeler Schanzen near the Danish town of Sønderborg . It documents the prehistory, the course and the effects of the German-Danish War of 1864 and in particular of its decisive battle, in which Prussian troops took the Düppeler Schanzen on April 18, 1864 , whereby the war was decided in favor of Prussia and Austria. The defeat of 1864 is one of the most important events in recent Danish history and has shaped the self-image of the Danish people and their relationship to Germany and Europe to the present day .
The history center, inaugurated in 1992, consists of an exhibition that also shows two films about the prehistory of the war and the battle of April 18, 1864, and an outdoor area with a true-to-original replica of one of the entrenchments that served as Danish defenses. In the main season, the museum employees appear in original uniforms as narrators; in the soldiers' village of the facility, visitors can experience the living conditions of the time through various activities.
In the vicinity of the museum there are various other sights with historical references to the German-Danish War. These include, among others , the Sønderborg Castle , the Düppeler Mühle , the destruction of which became a symbol of the battle, various memorials on graves for fallen Danish and Prussian soldiers, the remains of a German victory column erected until 1872 and destroyed after the end of the Second World War , as well as a memorial stone for Louis Appia and Charles van de Velde , who monitored the fighting during the war as neutral observers and thus became the first Red Cross delegates in history.
