Klosterkirche - Historical city information of Lutherstadt Wittenberg

The historical city information center is an exhibition building in Lutherstadt Wittenberg with a focus on the history of the city and which deals particularly with the Ascanian dynasty . It is located in a former Franciscan monastery and is entered through the town house.

building

According to a document that has been preserved, the monastery was founded in 1227 by Helena, wife of Albrechts of Askania, the first Duke of Saxony . The local monks were Franciscans. The monastery belonged to the Franciscan province of Saxonia . During the 13th and 14th centuries , the complex was expanded, which in large parts was already congruent with the facilities that are preserved today. The church played a central role in the city at that time, especially after the Ascanians made the church the site of their family burial around 1270 and expanded Wittenberg into their residence. Since the 15th century , the center of Wittenberg has increasingly moved to today's Old Market. The enlarged city church overtook the monastery church as the city's central church. The castle church, on the other hand, served the respective rulers as a place of worship and burial place. This development intensified with the Reformation and secularization . From 1536 the converted building was used as a granary. The monastery was abandoned and used for various civil purposes over the centuries, often as a warehouse. Parts of the building fell into disrepair and were demolished. After various possible uses had been considered in the 1990s, it was initially planned to accommodate city offices, which were to be supplemented by event rooms and smaller exhibition rooms. With the discovery of the Askanians' burial place in 2009, there was a reorientation with the aim of greater museum and public use of the building.

concept

With the historical city information, the last element of the central visitor reception on Arsenalplatz in Lutherstadt Wittenberg was completed in October 2015. The three other parts of this concept are the town hall (as a reception and conference building), the Wittenberg council archive and the tourist and town information center. Visitors to the city should get initial information about their visit in the renovated buildings and get an overview of the city's history. Together with the museum of the municipal collections in the arsenal , the Franciscan monastery forms a forum that combines the collections on urban history and prehistory of the region with the national collections on natural history and ethnology in a museum concept.

Permanent exhibition

Finding the crypt of Elector Rudolf II with his wife and daughter was a surprise: up until now, it had been assumed that the bones would be reburied in the 16th century . As a result, the plans for the town house and the monastery church were changed and plans were developed for a special place of remembrance for this epoch. The permanent exhibition of the Historical City Information provides information on the ruling dynasty of the Ascanians and highlights their influence on the city of Wittenberg, the state of Saxony-Anhalt and the entire Central German area. The exhibition is biographically oriented and, in addition to the presentation of original exhibits and archaeological finds, focuses on the museumization of the building itself. The impression of a cathedral is to be created by cross-fading techniques and projections . This room design was developed by the State Office for Monument Preservation and Archeology Saxony-Anhalt .
