The Osaka Historical Museum ( Japanese 大阪 歴 史 博物館 , Ōsaka Rekishi Hakubutsukan ) in Osaka presents Japanese history with reference to the city of Osaka. The term “Rekihaku” is also used as a short form for the museum. The opening in this building took place in 2001.

Overview

The tour of the museum, which is housed in a modern high-rise building, begins on the 10th floor, from which you move down to the 7th floor (for special exhibitions up to the 6th floor). There is a library and event rooms on the 2nd floor, the museum shop and a restaurant on the 1st floor. In the first basement you can take a look at the excavations before the construction of the current building. From the time 1350 years ago (Asuka period) there are traces of warehouses.

There are two ways of walking through the floors of the museum. There is a tour of the main sights, all of which are shown in their original size and, if necessary, explained by videos. This takes about an hour. Another thorough tour also includes the models and showcases. The stairwell offers the opportunity to view the nearby Osaka Castle from a high point of view.

  • 10th floor: Part of the throne room ( 大 極 殿 , Daigokuden ) of the imperial palace “Naniwa Miya” ( 難 波 宮 ) is reconstructed in its original size, with red lacquered columns with a diameter of 70 cm and a large number of life-size dolls in historical costume. Gagaku sounds as well .
  • 9th floor: Here the city, located on the river and criss-crossed by canals, is presented from its construction by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and in the Edo period with models on a scale of 1:20 and with objects.
  • 8th floor: The working method of archeology is shown as an example. Working groups are also organized.
  • 7th floor: City life in Osaka from the Taishō and Shōwa periods is shown up to the Second World War.
