One focus of the museum are exhibits from the time of Alexander the Great , especially mosaics . The museum also provides insights into the history of the Sughd region, starting with relics of prehistoric cultures in the area, to elaborate dresses that showcase the elaborate Tajik embroidery, and hand-woven carpets. The entrance hall of the museum is dominated by a statue of Timur Malik , who was governor of Khujand in the 13th century and who became a national hero in Tajikistan through his heroic but ultimately futile defense of the city against the invasion of the Mongols .
