Miliaria (synonyms miliary fever , fever miliaris , heat rash , Schwitzbläschen , heat rash , heat-pox , Red Dog , dermatitis hidrotica , Hidroa or sudamina ) is the medical term for an often itchy rash , which is caused by increased sweating in hot weather. The treatment consists of wearing loose clothing that is adapted to the climate and, if necessary, using antipruritic medication.

root cause

With increased sweat production due to the heat, the excretory ducts of the sweat glands are blocked . This can occur at different depths of the skin, which gives rise to different symptoms and a corresponding division of the miliaria.

to form

With closure of the ducts in the epidermis ( epidermis ) arising Miliaria rubra . Miliaria cristallina is the name given to the rash when water-white, easily bursting blisters develop through closure in the horny layer of the epidermis. If the vesicle is milky, the rash is called Miliaria alba . On the other hand, if there is closure in deeper layers ( stratum papillare of the dermis, dermis ), a miliaria profunda follows .

Symptoms

Preferably on covered areas of the body such as the torso, in babies also in the diaper area, intensely reddened spots and nodules ( papules ) initially appear . The changes increase in areas where skin lies on skin (armpits, groin). Secondary itchy or burning blisters with clear or milky content develop from the nodules.

diagnosis

The diagnosis can be made clinically by taking the medical history ( anamnesis ) and the typical skin rash. A skin biopsy would show histologically next to the vesicles a collection of inflammatory cells around the ducts of the sweat glands.

therapy

First and foremost, the treatment includes choosing suitable, sufficiently airy clothing. The rash can be treated externally with drying measures, a so-called dry brushing, for example with a zinc oxide shaking mixture. Oral antihistamines are also used for severe itching .
