Hixterwald
The Hixterwald or Sölder Holz is a small contiguous wooded area on the city limits between Dortmund and Holzwickede .
It extends between the suburbs of Sölderholz and Lichtendorf in the west and the Holzwickeder district of Dudenroth in the east. These place names indicate that the forest was much larger in the past, before clearing and logging continued to restrict it.
The profile of the forest drops noticeably from the south at the Kellerkopf to the north towards the Selbachtal.
The Hixterwald houses the historic, original source of the Emscher . Today it is drained northwards through the Selbach into the Emscher.
The Hixterwald is of particular importance as an early coal mining area . Evidence of primitive mining in the 18th and 19th centuries can still be seen everywhere. In the forest there are pings , transport routes and remains of the pit from the Schwarze Adler colliery .
