Hlin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the Nordic mythology Hlín is (altnordisch "protector") to Snorri Sturluson and the nafnaþulur a female deity with the goddess Frigg is in close contact. She used this to protect people. Hlín is mentioned in a poem in the Völuspá and is there a synonym for Frigg himself. In the Skaldend the name is often used as Kenning for "woman".

Theories

Andy Orchard and Rudolf Simek state that the Völuspá Hlín is just another name for Frigg. Probably Snorri misunderstood the verse and mistook her for a goddess of her own. Furthermore, Rudolf Simek adds that the goddesses Saga , Hlín, Sjöfn , Snotra , Vár and Vör also represent protective goddesses who were all responsible for certain tasks in the private sphere of people, comparable to the matrons . John Lindow notes that if Hlín is indeed Frigg, it means that Hlín's "second mourning" in Völuspá concerns the death of Odin , the first concerns the death of Baldur.
