The monastery is located on a hill near the village of Kurtan in a gorge of the Gargar River, which flows into the Dzoraget River a few kilometers away. The Armenian capital Yerevan is 164 kilometers away.

In addition to the main church, the monastery complex includes two other churches, a Gawit and various residential and farm buildings that are spread across the site. The buildings of the monastery are richly decorated with reliefs. The main church was built in the 7th century as a cross-domed church. From the outside, the building is rectangular. Inside, the floor plan is cross-shaped.

history

The origins of the monastery go back to the 7th century. In 1144 a nobleman named Smbat from the Orbelian family had the monastery completely rebuilt. An inscription in Georgian in the drum of the main church reminds of this . The Gawit was built from 1186 to 1206.

The Orbelian were a side branch of the Liparitiden, who were once among the greatest feudal lords of Georgia until they were expelled from the country in the 12th century and settled in Armenia. Smbat himself was the ancestor of the Armenian princes of Syunik . The Armenian government commissioned the renovation of the monastery. The collapsed dome of the main church was restored.
