The Hirt blast furnace is opposite the Hirt brewery on the banks of the Metnitz in the municipality of Micheldorf and is an important example of classicist industrial construction in Austria.

description

The iron smelting was first mentioned in Hirt in 1554, when an iron smelting plant of the Gurk diocese was mentioned. A new raft oven was built here in the middle of the 17th century . In the 18th century, Anton von Auersperg had the plant completely renovated and renewed by Johann Georg Hagenauer around 1773. In addition to the blast furnace, sintering works , water stamping works, five hammers and four rammers were built. In 1872 the Hüttenberger Eisenwerk-Gesellschaft bought the plant and the blast furnace was blown out in the following year. In 1963 the industrial monument was restored. The masonry of the ironworks with the blast furnace built in 1806 from quarry stones has been preserved from the former industrial plant.

Markus Pernhart documented the operation of the blast furnace system in two oil paintings.
