The place was first mentioned in 1129 when Wortwin von Hohenwang exchanged possessions in Gerspach for possessions in Musobrunnen with the Wettenhausen monastery . Both places were in the immediate vicinity and have disappeared over the centuries . In 1146 Heinrich von Hohenwang attests to a document from the Premonstratensian Monastery of Roggenburg , from 1160 to 1185 Wortwin von Hohenwang can be verified as provost of the Wettenhausen monastery.

In the following centuries, Hochwang was the camera location of the Margraviate of Burgau and the seat of a margravial judicial bailiff. With the Peace of Pressburg in 1805, Hochwang and the entire margraviate of Burgau came to the Kingdom of Bavaria .

In 1970 the Bavarian Minister of the Interior gave the municipality its own coat of arms. This shows a gold-crowned red lion on a silver background and a golden harrow and a golden shuttle on the back on a black background.

With effect from January 1, 1971, Hochwang joined the neighboring town of Ichenhausen and has been part of the town since then.
