history
Until modern times
A chard from Ichenhausen is first mentioned in a document in 1032. In 1392 a medieval parish church was consecrated. In 1406 the market rights were granted under the local rule of the Lords of Roth. In 1574 the imperial barons from Stain von Rechtenstein zu Niederstotzingen acquired the place. After 1652 the brothers Johann Joachim and Johann Andreas vom Stain divided Ichenhausen into two lordships, the upper castle and the lower castle district, each with their own administrations. In 1784 the two districts were reunited. With the Rhine Confederation Act in 1806, the place became part of the Kingdom of Bavaria and in 1818 became a patrimonial community through the municipal edict that existed until 1843.
Jewish families have lived in the village for centuries, and they set up their own Jewish cemetery on the road to Krumbach and built a synagogue at Vorderen Ostergasse 24 in 1687 . This was renewed in 1781.
20th century
In 1913 Ichenhausen was promoted to town . In 1933, 13% of the population were Jewish. During the November pogrom in 1938 , the Jewish house of worship and the Jewish cemetery were devastated on November 10, organized by the Günzburg NSDAP district leadership. In 1948, seven people were sentenced to prison terms in a criminal case before the Memmingen district court .
Numerous Jewish citizens moved to larger cities, where they felt more secure in anonymity, or emigrated abroad. Those who remained were deported and killed on April 1, 1942 (84 people to Lublin ), August 6, 1942 (28 people to Theresienstadt ) and March 8, 1943 (ten people to Auschwitz ); only one woman survived.
Eighteen concentration camp prisoners from the Burgau satellite camp were buried in the Jewish cemetery .
The collapse of the church tower
In 1964 the nave of the old Catholic parish church of St. Johannes Baptist was expanded and partly rebuilt. However, the church tower should be preserved. This collapsed as a result of the renovation work on the church on Easter Monday in 1964. People were not injured. In the parish's Catholic parish hall, a pointer from the church tower clock hangs above the main entrance.
Incorporations
Five parts of the municipality belong to Ichenhausen: On January 1, 1971, Hochwang was incorporated. On July 1, 1971, Oxenbronn was added. On May 1, 1978, the municipality parts Autenried, Deubach and Rieden an der Kötz followed as part of the regional reform .
