Creaton , headquartered in Wertingen near Augsburg, is one of the largest German manufacturers of clay roof tiles . The company has an export share of approx. 35% and an annual turnover of approx. 200 million euros. It is the market leader in the field of plain tiles and one of the leading manufacturers of pressed roof tiles in Europe.
At 10 locations with 17 factories, 1,016 employees work on an annual production of around 270 million roof tiles, which corresponds to around 18 million m² of roof area or 200,000 single-family houses. The majority shareholder of Creaton is the Belgian Etex Group .
history
Alois Berchtold founded a brick factory in Wertingen in 1884, which was modern by the standards of the time. Right from the start, he gained a reputation as a quality manufacturer of pan bricks.
In 1934 Anton Ott founded a brick factory in Autenried . Bricks have been produced at this location for three centuries. From 1945 the son Ernst Ott specialized in the production of classic brick shapes, in particular plain tiles .
Josef Berchtold GmbH and Ernst Ott GmbH & Co. KG, which previously worked closely together, merged on January 1, 1992 to form Creaton Berchtold & Ott GmbH. In August 1995 Creaton was converted into a stock corporation and listed on the stock exchange. With the takeover of Ströher GmbH in 1998, Guttau in Saxony was integrated into the company as a further location. Here the colored roof tile models “Kera-Biber” and “Premion” are manufactured using the “Keralis” production process.
A competence center for special ceramics was founded in 2004 in Weroth , Rhineland-Palatinate . There Creaton produces the ceramic facade system “Tonality”, the terrace element “Kerato” and the “screed tile”. Creaton opened its first foreign plant in Lenti , Hungary , in 2004. With this investment, the Southeast European markets should be better served and developed. The Belgian building materials group Etex became the majority shareholder in Creaton in 2005 and achieved the clay roof tile market leadership in Germany with the Pfleiderer and Meindl brands . In 2007 these brands were bundled in the Creaton brand association. In 2008, the integration of Trost Dachkeramik carried Malsch in the brand alliance.
In December 2008 and at the beginning of 2009, the Federal Cartel Office imposed considerable fines totaling 188 million euros on Creaton AG, the then still existing Pfleiderer GmbH and Etex Holding and seven other companies in the clay roof tile industry for participating in anti-competitive agreements on clay roof tiles. In 2006, almost the entire industry agreed to raise prices by 4–6% by levying a so-called “energy surcharge”.
The company's listing ended in September 2017 due to a squeeze out . The stock corporation became a GmbH in July 2018.
