The Memmingen Regional Court is a court of ordinary jurisdiction . It is one of 22 regional courts in the Free State of Bavaria .

history

The forerunner of today's regional court is the Bavarian district court , founded in 1857 , which was converted into a regional court with the Courts Constitution Act of 1879 . In 1894 and 1920, the Memmingen Regional Court belonged to the Augsburg Higher Regional Court . The district courts in Babenhausen, Buchloe, Günzburg, Illertissen, Krumbach, Memmingen, Mindelheim, Neu-Ulm, Ottobeuren, Türkheim and Weißenhorn existed during this time. After its dissolution, the next higher instance was the Munich Higher Regional Court .

In addition to the independent city of Memmingen, the district of the LG Memmingen extends to the following districts :

399 lawyers (as of January 17, 2019) are admitted to the Memmingen district court .

Courthouse

The court is housed on the site of the former hospital of the Kreuzherrenkloster on the Hallhof .

Superordinate and subordinate courts

The Memmingen Regional Court is one of ten regional courts over which the Munich Higher Regional Court is superordinate; subordinate to this are the local courts in Günzburg , Memmingen and Neu-Ulm . The forensic medical service is also located in Memmingen and currently has two forensic doctors.

There are 4 civil chambers, 2 chambers for commercial matters, 5 criminal chambers (including a youth chamber) and a criminal enforcement chamber.

Known procedures

Because of the November 1938 pogrom against the Jewish community in Fellheim , charges were brought against eight people before the Memmingen district court in August 1948, and six were sentenced to imprisonment.

The criminal proceedings against a doctor for termination of pregnancy, the main hearing of which took place from September 1988 to May 1989 at the Memmingen Regional Court, became known as the Memmingen Trial . Around 360 people had previously been prosecuted for having had abortions. This case became known nationwide as the Memminger witch hunt or the Memminger witch trials and led to considerable criticism of the prosecution practices of the Memmingen public prosecutor .

In the courthouse, trainee lawyers are trained in a working group in a fixed classroom.
