Hoekerfest

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hoekerfest is the Herford city and street festival, which was founded in 1973 by Heinz Schön and is celebrated annually in June, July or August.

The name comes from hökern , which means to act . It was chosen because Herford is an old trading and Hanseatic city .

The Hoekerfest lasted ten days in the first few years, but was reduced to five days from Wednesday to Sunday for cost reasons. Depending on the weather, up to 200,000 people from the city and the surrounding area visit the festival every year. In 2011 more than 120,000 visitors came. In 2012 the number of visitors was estimated at 150,000 and in 2018 more than 200,000 people came to Herford city center.

It is a community festival with a cultural program organized by associations and schools as well as local and regional artists who perform on four stages on the Old Market , the New Market , the Gänsemarkt and the Linnenbauerplatz as well as street artists throughout the city center. In the area of Rathausplatz / Münsterkirchplatz, actors from a street theater usually appear. With a few exceptions, nationally known artists and musicians will not appear due to the cost. There are also no rides.

Around the stages there are beverage and snack stands on the four squares and in the pedestrian zone , with wine stands from vintners from various German wine-growing regions being set up on the Gänsemarkt. Beer stands predominate on the other seats.

In most years there is a bike race on the Berliner Straße on Fridays and a flea market in the pedestrian zone on Sundays.

In June 2013 the Hoekerfest took place as part of the 33rd Hanseatic Days of Modern Times .
