The farm pharmacy in the center of Coburg is a corner building on the eastern side of the market square facing Steingasse. The three-storey, steep gable roof building is adorned with a rectangular bay window, a statue of the Virgin and a statue of St. Christopher and is one of the oldest buildings on Coburg's market square.

Building

The building consists of two parallel pitched roof houses on the market and in Steingasse, which are connected by an intermediate building. The front building was mentioned as early as the middle of the 15th century. The rear building was built around 1510 and the intermediate building around 1500. Various conversions and renovations changed the building over the centuries. The architect was Leopold Oelenheinz the front building in 1911 as part of a Gothicising rebuilding the plaster removed and the sandstone masonry detached home and put six dormers corresponding to the three floors of the roof truss. The original rib vaults are still present on the ground floor of the front building. Only the basement and ground floor remain of the original rear building in Steingasse.

At the corner of the building there is a figure of the Virgin with Christ in her arm, standing on a crescent moon, made around 1500. Behind it, in the gable facade, there is a flat rectangular bay on a chalice console. In Steingasse, above the pointed arched side gate of the intermediate building, there is a high-quality, 1.5 meter tall Christophorus sculpture, created around 1510. Below is a front door from the 17th century with twisted columns, fittings and door knockers .

particularities

The building has been used as a pharmacy since 1543, initially under the name “Pharmacy for the golden bouquet”. Cyriakus Schnauß (* 1512; † 1571) was the name of the first pharmacist. His tombstone was placed in the pharmacy courtyard as a sight. The pharmacy has been run by the Priesner family since 1864.
The court liqueur is a house specialty. It is made according to a recipe known only to the “court pharmacist”. The herbal liqueur is sweet, but strong and spicy in taste. "
