Ceramic Column Grid Array

The Ceramic Column Grid Array (CCGA) is a form of housing for integrated circuits . CCGA housings are currently one of the most reliable housing types and are used in space travel and in the field of military technology. For these areas, manufacturers offer highly integrated circuits such as microprocessors or FPGAs, also in CCGA housings. For the civil market, and especially for the consumer electronics sector, these chip housings are not available due to the high lead content due to trade bans in the EU within the framework of the RoHS directives .

On the underside of the housing are columnar (engl. Column , dt .: Column ') solder connections of highly leaded solder (Sn10 / Pb90, also SN20 / Pb80). Due to the high lead content, the soldering temperature is higher than with conventional soft solder with a tin content of over 60%. The “pillars” formed in this way are arranged in a grid like the Ball Grid Array . In contrast to this, the connections do not collapse when the solder melts due to the high proportion of lead and thus guarantee a fixed distance between the underside of the housing and the circuit board . Also is visual inspection by the endoscope by the higher spacing better possible.
