Hohenwerbig village church

Hohenwerbig is a village in the southern district of Potsdam-Mittelmark (Brandenburg). It is a district of the city of Niemegk and has 188 inhabitants (as of 1996).

The village is about 13 kilometers southeast of the district town of Bad Belzig . It was first mentioned in a document as “villa Werbek” in 1375. The place name could be Slavic (“place where there are pastures”) or Flemish (from “Wervik” in Flanders) origin. In the 15th century it was under the jurisdiction of the Rabenstein Bailiwick .

Hohenwerbig developed as a street village . In the center of the village, surrounded by a cemetery, is the village church , which was built in the first half of the 13th century .
