The High Gate (also Upper Gate ) is a listed building of brick Gothic in Olsztyn (German Allenstein ) in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship , formerly part of East Prussia , in Poland .

history

The high gate is part of the former fortifications of the city and one of three former city gates. It is located in the northeast area of the old town. The gate was built from brick in the 14th century in the first building phase of the castle of the Cathedral Chapter of Warmia . It has four floors, another floor in the area of the gable and is provided with a gable roof. In 1788 the gate was rebuilt and used as an armory . From 1858 it served as a prison. In it sat the Polish historian, ethnographer and poet Wojciech Kętrzyński (1838-1918) in 1863 for smuggling arms for Polish insurgents. A plaque commemorates him.

From 1898 a police station was housed in the gate. At the end of the 19th century, the tower was structurally changed again; so he got a passage for pedestrians. The destruction of large parts of the old town by arson in January 1945 after the occupation of the city by the Red Army in the final phase of the Second World War survived the High Gate.

In 2003 the Hohe Tor was renovated. To commemorate the 650th anniversary of the city this year, a commemorative plaque was attached to the Hohe Tor. As a gift from Pope John Paul II to the citizens of the city, a glass mosaic was installed in a niche on the old town side, which shows Mary as Queen of Peace. The mosaic was made in a workshop in Rome. A bronze plaque commemorates the donation. Another bronze plaque with the portrait of the Pope was consecrated in 2006 on the first anniversary of John Paul II's death.
