The Hokkaidō Takushoku Tetsudō ( Japanese 北海道 拓殖 鉄 道 ) was the railway line of the Japanese railway company of the same name . It was located in the center of the island of Hokkaidō and was in operation from 1928 to 1968.
description
The 54.3 km long route was cape gauge , single track and not electrified; it served 15 train stations and stops on demand. It branched off from the Nemuro main line in Shintoku and opened up a sparsely populated, agricultural area on the northern edge of the Tokachi plain . It crossed the Shimizibu Line twice without being connected to it. In Kami-Shihoro she met the Shihoro Line of the state railway.
history
Private railways in Hokkaidō were mostly built to connect coal mines or fishing ports with the nearest train station. Hokkaidō Takushoku Tetsudō, founded in Tokyo in 1925, took a different approach . They wanted to build a railway line in the still largely undeveloped northern part of the Tokachi Plain to enable the targeted settlement of forest, industrial and agricultural businesses. The first section between Shintoku and Shikaoi was opened on December 15, 1928. Eleven months later, on November 26, 1929, the rest of the route between Shikaoi and Kami-Shihoro was opened . Several stops were added by 1936.
Overall, the route did not meet the expectations placed on it. On August 31, 1949, the section between Higashi-Urimaku and Kami-Shihoro had to be shut down due to insufficient utilization. The company was never able to build enough reserves to renew the outdated facilities. The Kumaushi Tunnel had to be closed on February 1, 1968 due to the risk of collapse, which led to the remaining route being split in two. It was finally shut down on October 1, 1968.
The company remained as a forwarding agency. The subsidiary Hokkaidō Takushoku Bus , which was outsourced in 1960 , operates numerous bus routes in the region.
