Holger Kimmig

Holger Kimmig (born March 5, 1975 ) is a German disabled athlete .

Life

Holger Kimmig is severely disabled (thigh amputation on the right, knee part stiffening on the left). Nevertheless, he did not want to forego intense physical activity. As the sport in question for him, he chose swimming, which he could practice in the starting class S8 or SM8 (in relays S7-10). Within the swimming sport he swam both individually and in a team in the disciplines back, freestyle and posture over various distances between 50 m and 400 m. His club is the disabled sports group Offenburg .

Because of his good performance, he was appointed to the German national disabled swimming team. At the 1992 Summer Paralympics in Barcelona he won two silver medals with the 4 x 100 m freestyle relay and over 100 m back. In 1994 he won two golds (100 m back, 4 × 100 m individual medley), two silver and one bronze at the IPC Swimming World Championships in Malta.

Kimmig was particularly successful at the 1996 Paralympic Summer Games in Atlanta. He managed to win a total of 7 medals, three gold, three silver and one bronze. First he won over 100 m back, then he was in the performance group S 7-10 together with Detlef Schmidt , Oliver Anders and Stefan Löffler Olympic winner in the 4 x 100 m freestyle relay. Another 1st place followed in the same line-up in the 4 × 100 m individual medley. In the 100 m individual freestyle, he came second and won a silver medal (performance group S 8). He also won a silver medal in the 400 m freestyle and 200 m medley. Finally he won a bronze medal in the 50 m freestyle singles. For these successes he was awarded the silver laurel leaf by the Federal President .

In 1998 Kimmig competed at the IPC Swimming World Championships in Christchurch and won a silver and a bronze medal in the 100 m back and freestyle. At the Summer Paralympics 2000 he won gold over 100 m backstroke, silver over 100 m freestyle and bronze over 200 m medley.

In an interview at the end of 2000, Kimmig, who lives in Elgersweier , said that he hardly ever went swimming internationally, but wanted to concentrate on his sports studies in Freiburg. Currently (as of 2019) he is the deputy managing director and sports advisor at the Baden Disabled and Rehabilitation Sports Association.
