The Holt Gas-Electric Tank was a tank built by the Holt Manufacturing Company in partnership with General Electric . It was the first tank to be built in the United States . In the course of 1917 a first prototype was developed, which was built in the spring of 1918.
Chassis and engine
The tracked chassis was an elongated and modified version of the chassis used by the Holt tractors. The chains were driven by two electric motors whose energy was generated by a generator. Similar to the St. Chamond , the Holt Gas-Electric Tank was operated by separate electric motors and controlled by electrical resistors. This made the steering more comfortable than mechanical steering, but the motors could overheat more easily. The engine output was 67 kW (90 hp) at a top speed of just under 10 km / h. The maximum range was 50 km.
