Holy Rosary Cathedral (Vancouver)
The Holy Rosary Cathedral (dt. Cathedral of the Holy Rosary ) is a Roman Catholic cathedral in the Canadian city of Vancouver and the seat of the Archdiocese of Vancouver . It is located in downtown on Richards Street.
Building
The first Catholic church building opened in 1889 and was made entirely of wood. Ten years later it was replaced by a new stone building. After a construction period of 490 days, the inauguration took place on December 8, 1900. In 1916 the church was elevated to a cathedral.
The neo-Gothic style cathedral was built from sandstone from Gabriola Island and is shaped like a cross. It is 49 m long, 32 m wide and 19 m high. The height of the church tower is 66 m. The architects were TE Julian and HJ Williams.
Church art
Located since the spring of 2017 at the entrance of the cathedral a copy of the Canadian artist Timothy Schmalz designed from Toronto, life-size bronze sculpture Homeless Jesus ( Homeless Jesus ) from the year 2014. It shows a dressed in a long robe man on a park bench lies. The face is hidden under a hood, and wounds can be seen on the bare feet. On the accompanying board is verse 38 from the 25th chapter of the Gospel according to Matthew (see Mt 25.38 EU ): "And when did we see you and receive you as a stranger or naked and give you clothes?"
organ
The organ was built in 1900 by the organ builder Karn-Warren and restored in 1999 by Casavant Frères . The instrument has 49 registers on three manuals and pedal (2,899 pipes ), including 4 transmitted and three extended registers. The playing and stop actions are electro-pneumatic.
