Honest Schempp

Honest Schempp (bourgeois Hans Schempp , * 1932 in Lindau (Bodensee) , † in spring 2019 in Lindau (Bodensee)) was a German painter and author.

Life

Honest Schempp graduated from high school in 1951 and then worked for a short time at Dornier in Lindau. In 1952 he began studying pedagogy and was active in the teaching profession for 40 years. In the 1960s he trained in printmaking techniques in Augsburg, Munich and France (Mandelieu).

Parallel to his training, Schempp was already working as an artist and since 1964 has signed his work with "Honest". In 1965 he opened his own printing workshop for lithography and etchings, which he ran until 1995. He was a founding member of the Lindau Circle (1964) and later the Neue Gruppe Lindau (1976). In December 2016 he was awarded the "Culture Prize of the City of Lindau".

Style and artistic focus

  • Honest Schempp devoted himself to drawings until 1960.
  • In the period from 1960 to 1970, Schempp preferred religious subjects ( woodcuts , lithographs ) and also created illustrations and graphic cycles etc. a. for the Württembergische Bibelanstalt Stuttgart and for the Bavarian television
  • After 1970 he worked with self-collected earth colors and after 1975 found his focus in tempera painting .
