Hoodoo Gurus is an Australian rock band formed in Sydney in 1981 .

Band history

The band around founding member, songwriter and singer Dave Faulkner first came together in 1981 as Le Hoodoo Gurus . The line-up was unusual in that Faulkner, Radalj and Rendall were all guitarists and initially waived the obligation of a bass player. Together they played the first single Leilani , which was released in October 1982. At this point, Rendall had already left the band, he replaced bassist Clyde Bramley. A little later, Radalj also left the band and Brad Shepherd joined the band. In this line-up, the gurus recorded their debut album Stoneage romeos , which was released in 1984 and named Debut Album of the Year in Australia . The album was also successful in the alternative and college charts in the USA. James Baker left the group for the American tour and Mark Kingsmill took over the drums for him.

As early as 1985 Mars needs guitars! the band's second album, which quickly became a chart success. With the single What's my scene? from the successor Blow your cool! the gurus recorded their biggest international hit to date, followed by an extensive world tour. In 1988 Clyde Bramley left the band, who replaced Rick Grossman. With this reshuffle, the lineup, which is still active today, was completed.

With this line-up, the Gurus released four more albums by 1996, all of which had continued success. After 15 years, the band finally announced their breakup for 1997, and at the end of the year they went on an extensive farewell tour through Australian pubs. On January 11, 1998 the Gurus gave their last concert in Melbourne. The following years were characterized by various solo and band projects of the individual members, in 2001 the band came together again for a concert.

In 2004 the gurus finally signed a new record deal and released their comeback album Mach Schau . In July 2007 they were inducted into the Australian ARIA Hall of Fame . After changing the record company in 2009, their new album Purity of Essence was released in 2010 . In 2015 drummer Mark Kingsmill left the band and Nik Rieth took his place.
