Gordon Hookey

Gordon Hookey (* 1961 in Cloncurry ) is an Australian painter .

life and work

Gordon Hookey is a member of the Waanyi people . In 1984 he completed an apprenticeship as a bricklayer . Since 1992 he has been a member of the Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Cooperative . He completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts at the College of Fine Arts , Paddington in 1994 and lives in Brisbane, where he has been a member of the ProppaNOW artists' collective since 2006 .

In his work he combines figurative signs, iconic symbols and bold comic texts with a whole spectrum of bright colors. The focus of his painting series “Murriland!” Is the history of the origins of what is now known as Queensland in Australia.

Hookey took part in numerous exhibitions, including the Biennale of Sydney in 2004 and documenta 14 in Kassel in 2017 .
