Hop Island is a 5 km long and rocky island off the Ingrid Christensen coast of the East Antarctic Princess Elisabeth Land . It is one of the largest islands in the Rauer Islands group and is located 1.5 km west-southwest of Filla Island .
Norwegian cartographers mapped them using aerial photographs from the Lars Christensen expedition in 1936/37 . They gave a supposedly much larger island with a supposed southern branch and a bay the descriptive name Hopøy (Norwegian for cluster island ). A more precise mapping was carried out in 1952 by John H. Roscoe using the aerial photographs of Operation Highjump (1946-1947), as a result of which the Norwegian name was transferred into English.
