Live and act

Hori Shinji attended from 1906 the training facility of the private art school "Taiheiyō Gakai Kenkyūjo" (太平洋 画 会 研究所), where he learned drawing under Nakamura Fusetsu and modeling under Shinkai Taketarō . During his training, he made friends with Tobari Kogan and Nakahara Teijirō . His sculpture "Old Woman" (老婆, Rōba), which he showed at the 5th " Colorful " exhibition in 1911, won written recognition for its credible realism. In 1911 he had already become a member of the Taiheiyō Gakai.

After the Pacific War he helped to rebuild the training facility of the Taiheiyō gakai, which had been destroyed in the war during the air raids. In 1950 Hori became a professor at Chiba University , and in 1954 he took over the management of the Taiheiyō gakai training facility.

Hori won the 1961 Academy of Arts Prize with his sculpture “Crowd of People” (人海, Jinkai), exhibited at the 3rd “ Shin-Nitten ” exhibition . Other notable sculptures are “Portrait of the old H” (H 老人 の 肖像, H Rōjin no Shōzō) and “Woman bathed in light” (光 に 浴 せ る 女, Hikari ni yokuseru onna).
